11 Principles

Our principles make it so we all have a common guideline in building our community. They are the pillars of our common experience during Kiez Burn.

Participation

Participate, don’t spectate – Kiez Burn happens only when you get involved. Kiez Burn is run exclusively by volunteers – that means YOU.

Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Radical Self-Expression

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

Radical Self-Reliance

You are responsible for your physical and emotional wellbeing. We encourage the individual to discover, exercise, and rely on their inner resources.

From food and water to a hug or quiet, you need to take care of yourself. Give yourself what you need – and ask others for help when you need it. Host yourself so as to be able to host others.

No Commerce

There is nothing to buy or sell here folks! By removing commerce from our community, we create co-operation and participation. We plan ahead and work together. We live without money to remind us of what’s really important.

Leave No Trace

We care for the environment, and we take care of our home. We clean up after ourselves. We aspire to go above and beyond by leaving our temporary home in an even better state than when we found them.

Whatever you bring into Kiez Burn, you are responsible for taking this Matter Out of Place (MOOP) with you, when you leave.

Community

A family of individuals, we look after each other. We value cooperation and collaboration. A diverse group of separate self-reliant beings, we are united in our need to be part of something larger than ourselves. Community, others, self – united by tolerance and joy.

Inclusion

We welcome everyone for their unique contribution to our community. Include others as you want to be included, with respect, consideration, and tolerance.

Gifting

We give to help others and because it makes us feel good. From a cold beer to digging out a tent pole to a small badge, our gifts come from the heart. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

Communal Effort

Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote, and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

Immediacy

Make now count. All this will soon be gone, so enjoy now. Experience, participate, be. This is all there is. Through this, we seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with the natural world.

Consent

Respect the liberties of your fellow human beings. Give only what’s appreciated, take only what is offered. As a community with diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and communication styles, it’s best to use clear verbal communication to make sure everyone’s boundaries are understood and respected. We believe only YES means YES.
